Staircase - Studio Akkerhuis
Client:
private
Year:
2018
An old hospital in the Netherlands was converted into owner-occupied apartments over several floors. The newly created air spaces for stairwells were irregular and could be individually designed.
The client wanted the entire space over three floors to be preserved and the staircase to become a sculpture and part of the spatial experience in addition to its function. The flights of stairs move as a steel construction between two solid timber head ends and bridges and connect to the upper floor and attic in very different geometries.
