Bamboo Theatre - Studio Akkerhuis
Client:
Stichting Kunstklank
Year:
2017
The Kunstklank association stages a play every year, which is performed over two weeks in the summer at various locations in the coastal town of Noordwijk and the surrounding area. The idea of a reusable structure for 250 spectators, which offered protection from the weather and was to be built largely by volunteers, was obvious.
The material bamboo was the choice after extensive performance studies with a local engineering firm. Using the properties of three different types of bamboo, stands and a tent were designed, the latter of which can be stored in a 20-foot container durning winter season. The premiere performances took place on the beach in Noordwijk under a tent roof specially made by a sailing ship outfitter. In the following years, the location changed several times and attracted thousands of visitors.
